Greene County ranked 83rd among the 114 counties statewide on financial data tracking firm SmartAsset list of the lowest tax burdens in Missouri.
The local county scored an overall 71.21 out of 100 on the index measuring income, sales, property and fuel taxes. The higher the score, the better.
Greene County’s average income tax is $10,028, with a sales tax of $823, property tax of $1,136 and fuel tax of $347, according to SmartAsset. The nationwide average income tax, SmartAsset reports, is $10,049, with a sales tax of $990, property tax of $1,396 and fuel tax of $351.
Ozark County placed first on the list with a tax burden index score of 78.24, followed by Reynolds, at 77.54; Wright, at 77.53; Dunklin, at 77.12; and Wayne, at 77.05. No southwest Missouri counties placed in the top 10.
Nationwide, Greene County ranked 1,053rd. Ozark County had a U.S. rank of 539th, according to SmartAsset. The lowest tax burden in the country is in Yukon Koyukuk County, Alaska, according to the list.
