Former Springfield billboard businessperson Jack Lipscomb has died.
Jack Lipscomb, 96, died Jan. 4, according to his obituary posted to the website of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home Inc. His cause of death was not identified.
Lipscomb was second-generation owner of Pioneer Group, which later would become Pioneer Outdoor. He bought the business from his father-in-law, Lester E. Cox, and rose to become a leading member of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
In 1998, Jack and his son, Larry, sold Pioneer Group’s billboard displays to Lamar Advertising, the first of two deals between the companies. In 2022, Larry Lipscomb and his son, Stuart, sold the company's assets to Lamar after they re-entered the entry under the Pioneer name, according to past reporting.
Jack Lipscomb's obituary indicates he was additionally a second lieutenant with the Air Force and a member of the Springfield-Branson National Airport board in the 1960s.
Moseley’s Discount Office Products was purchased; Side Chick opened in Branson; and the Springfield franchise store of NoBaked Cookie Dough changed ownership.
