Open for Business: Garbo’s Pizzeria

Posted online

Garbo’s Pizzeria
Established in 1990, Garbo’s Pizzeria LLC passed the reins Dec. 15 to second-generation ownership. Laine Scholz said she is now sole owner after purchasing the remaining 50% stake in the business from her mother, company founder Pam Babcock. Scholz, who became a business partner with Babcock 12 years ago, declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal. She said Central Bank in Springfield and Rooney McBride & Smith LLC assisted on the transition. Garbo’s Pizzeria operates in Chesterfield Village at 2101 W. Chesterfield Blvd., Ste. C101. Scholz said the 18-employee restaurant consolidated there around 2010 after at one point having three locations – with others on East Sunshine Street and South National Avenue. Pointing to a five-year goal, Scholz said she has interest in expanding to more locations. Garbo’s menu includes a variety of pizzas, pastas, calzones, salads and sandwiches. Pizzas range $8-$30. She said the addition of fresh baked goods and more specialty pizzas are among upcoming menu changes.

Mercy Clinic Family Medicine and Obstetrics
Mercy Clinic Family Medicine and Obstetrics opened Aug. 21 at 721 E. Highland St. in Aurora. Ettie Berneking, public relations and communications manager for Mercy Springfield Communities, said the clinic occupies renovated space on the south side of Mercy Hospital Aurora. The location previously housed a Mercy family medicine clinic and offices, including finance, medical records and pastoral care, she said, noting the renovation was completed by McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. for $100,000. She said Mercy also spent an undisclosed amount equipping the clinic. The six-employee clinic provides primary care, including physical exams, X-rays and treatment of minor injuries, as well as pediatric and women’s health services, such as prenatal care. Mercy officials said the new clinic serves rural communities in Lawrence and surrounding counties.

Flourish Family Doulas
Siblings Ashley Johnson and Austin Long purchased Flourish Family Doulas from Kaylen King on Oct. 20. Long declined to disclose the purchase price for the 3-year-old business, which operates under Flourish FD LLC at 1136 W. Battlefield Road. While Long said most of the company’s doula services for birthing parents take place at hospitals, birthing centers or the clients’ homes, the 500-square-foot office is used for appointments and classes. Lease terms with landlord Angela McNeal were undisclosed. Flourish Family Doulas, which Long said serves much of southwest Missouri, including Joplin, employs 11 and offers service packages that include a free initial consultation. Talk and text support ranges $175 for one month to $650 for the full pregnancy term. In-person doula service, which includes pre- and post-birth visits, ranges $1,200-$1,600. Long, who also works remotely for North Bend, Washington-based e-commerce company Binary Anvil, said Johnson began employment as a doula last year with Flourish.
