Former House rep, Springfield mayor pro tem dies

Former Springfield lawmaker Chuck Wooten has died. He was 95.

Wooten, a Springfield native, died June 20, according to his obituary posted to the website of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home.

Wooten represented Greene County in the Missouri House of Representatives 1988-96, and he was a member of Springfield City Council 1983-88. He was mayor pro tem of council 1987-88, according to a news release from the city.

“What people will remember most of about Chuck was his many contributions to his community – a lifetime of public service,” Mayor Ken McClure said in the release. “The Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield would not be a reality without Chuck Wooten. He was a wonderful, caring person committed to public service."

A graveside service is scheduled June 29 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, which Wooten sponsored in the state legislature to bring to fruition.

Prior to working in public service, Wooten had a 34-year career with the U.S. Postal Service and served in the Navy for three years, according to the release. His obituary also indicates he held board member positions with organizations including the Springfield-Branson National Airport and SeniorAge Area Agency on Aging.
