Springfield's Baptist Bible College has changed its name.

The switch to Mission University was unveiled today on the school's new website.

"We believe that a new season is at hand. Throughout our 75-year history, BBC has produced alumni who have made a significant impact on our country and worldwide," President Mark Milioni said in a video announcement. "Our new name, Mission University, truly exemplifies our storied past, our present purpose and our future hopes."

Mission University started the fall 2023 semester with enrollment of 365, an 18% increase compared with a year earlier, according to past reporting. The school was founded in 1950.

"The decision to change our name wasn't taken lightly and was the result of deep prayer, much discussion and a focus on the future," said Milioni, pointing to a new mission statement: "Mission University educates, inspires and equips students to serve as effective Christian leaders."

A news release sent prior to the announcement indicated architectural plans for future development at the 628 E. Kearney St. school are in the works.
