VA sets grand opening date for long-awaited Springfield clinic

The Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks scheduled a Jan. 24 ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony for the Gene Taylor Community Based Outpatient Clinic after it launched for patients early last month.

Located near where Kansas Expressway ends at Republic Road, the multimillion-dollar clinic has been in the works since at least 2015. The 1850 W. Republic Road site was chosen by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in February 2016, and crews broke ground in October of that year, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. SBJ last reported the cost of the 92,000-square-foot clinic at $26 million.

The clinic, southeast of the planned extension of Kansas Expressway, features primary care, mental health, dental, optometry, radiology, sleep lab, prosthetics, pulmonary, and lab and radiology services. Mayor Ken McClure is scheduled to welcome guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony later this month, according to a news release.

The clinic brings more than 9,000 veterans within a 30-minute drive of primary care services, VA officials say.

Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks spokeswoman Wanda Shull said the clinic’s employees began being brought in during late November and the facility started seeing patients Dec. 5.

The Gene Taylor Community Outpatient Clinic replaced an existing Mount Vernon center, which remained in service while construction was underway on the Springfield facility.

“We have moved clinics in using a phased approach,” Shull said.

Westlake, Ohio-based Carnegie Management Corp. was hired as developer, with DeWitt & Associates Inc. as general contractor and Cleveland-based Westlake, Reed, Leskosky LLC as architect, SBJ previously reported.

The VA clinic is located along the booming West Republic Road development corridor, with projects including Magers Crossing, a Mercy Springfield Communities clinic and Volt Credit Union’s new branch.
