Forging the Path

In a predominantly male industry, American National is taking action by hiring women as agents and field leaders, but industry-wide females are still a minority. I am one of relatively few women who manage agents in the United States. When I was hired into this position, I was the first female manager in my region consisting of eight states.

Although my first meeting was a bit intimidating, I made a conscious effort to just be myself. Let’s be honest, it’s exhausting to be something you’re not, so save yourself the time and energy. I’m a straight shooter, and believe in being genuine and honest with people. In those early days, that meant being honest with the fact that I didn’t know everything. When I had questions, I asked. I didn’t wing it hoping everything would work out.

I never asked for special treatment.H I wanted to earn my peers’ respect. Today, I have a great relationship with the managers of my region and many others who represent American National throughout the US.

When it comes to expanding my team of agents, I’m simply looking for the most qualified individuals, hiring both males and females. Today my team is 40 percent female, which is higher than the industry on the whole.

Leading a team by example is the best approach. Demonstrating passion, strong work ethic and commitment is critical. I don’t ask my agents to do anything I don’t, haven’t, or wouldn’t do myself. I also believe strongly in investing in my team, showing them I’m committed to their agency’s growth and success. Ultimately, as a leader, it is your job to provide your team the resources and support they need, then trust and empower them to execute.
