State’s sales tax collections falter

Despite an increase in September, Missouri’s net general revenue collections are down in fiscal 2019 compared with the prior year.

Through September, collections from sales taxes came to $2.17 billion, down from $2.24 billion at the same time in fiscal 2018, according to a news release. The state’s fiscal year starts in July.

Fiscal 2019 gross collections, through September, by tax type:
    •    Individual income tax collections dropped 2.8 percent to $1.6 billion compared with fiscal 2018.
    •    Sales and use tax collections totaled $547.9 million, a 2.3 percent increase.
    •    Corporate income and franchise tax collections increased 1.9 percent to $109.6 million.
    •    All other collections were down 1.6 percent to $110.3 million.
    •    Refunds rose 32 percent to $167.3 million.

During the month of September, collections were $895.2 million, up 2.3 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to the release.
