Springfield’s March sales tax check from the Missouri Department of Revenue came in 2.5 percent higher than the same month of 2018.
The city received $4.4 million, compared with $4.3 million a year earlier. That brings year-to-date fiscal year tax revenue for the city to $35.3 million, a 2.7 percent increase compared with $34.4 million at the same time a year earlier. The city’s fiscal year started July 1, according to a news release.
The March check represents sales processed by the state in February from transactions made mostly in January.
Springfield uses sales tax revenue from the Department of Revenue to fund the Police and Fire departments and other public services. Roughly 56 percent of the city’s general fund comes from sales and use taxes, according to the release.
The latest figures represent a change in reporting by the city, which previously compared tax revenue check totals with Springfield officials’ projections.
