The Springfield Art Museum earned a rare accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums.
The local institution is one of 19 accredited museums statewide and the only one located in southwest Missouri. The majority of accredited Missouri museums are in the St. Louis and Kansas City markets, according to the American Alliance of Museums’ website.
The alliance uses a variety of factors in its accreditation process, including requirements that museums be open to the public at least 1,000 hours per year; have accessioned at least 80 percent of their permanent collection; and operate efficiently in terms of finances.
“Moving through the process of accreditation has been a challenge and reward in and of itself,” Springfield Art Museum Director Nick Nelson said in a news release. “We found reference in board meeting notes going back to the 1980s that reference a desire to achieve AAM accreditation.
“It is extremely gratifying to be able to bring this long-held intention to fruition.”
The 1111 E. Brookside Drive art museum was one of 18 recently accredited — and the only in Missouri — by the AAM. According to a separate news release from the organization, 1,070 of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums are currently accredited.
