Second pizza shop closes in same spot downtown

A second pizza shop closed in the same downtown spot as another in as many years.

New York Style Pizzeria is the latest casualty of the 210 S. Market Ave., Ste. 124, space in downtown development College Station. The restaurant in April 2018 filled the spot left vacant by Calgaro’s Pizzeria, which closed in September 2017 after 18 months.

Co-owner Robert Brough said New York Style Pizzeria closed Dec. 24 after operating for nearly nine months. He cited the restaurant’s location and lack of sufficient parking.

“Without a ton of advertising, people didn’t even know I was there,” he said via Facebook Messenger, noting it was “not an easy decision but definitely a wise financial one.”

Brough also said his business partner, Kevin McMillan, left the business in June, causing “added expenses in overhead for payroll.”

A September Facebook post by New York Style Pizzeria indicates customers may have been concerned about the name of the business, which featured a monochrome image of the New York City skyline.

“I know there has been a lot of confusion since I opened the doors,” the post reads. “Some say it’s nothing like New York style, others say I am a goon and need to get training. Well, everyone, I managed to stumble across a website that will speak for itself. I apologize for the confusion in the difference from true New York style and Long Island style — also referred to as Neapolitan pizza.”

Paul Tillman, property manager for College Station owner Tillman Redevelopment LLC, said he had interest for the 3,000-square-foot space prior to New York Style Pizzeria’s closure. He said Tillman Redevelopment has since reached back out to those people — who he declined to name but said have restaurant interests — and is marketing the property on its website. The company’s website lists the space for lease at nearly $4,000 per month.
