Romanian food truck opens in lot vacated by Wheelhouse

Husband-and-wife Romulus and Hannelore Manole are bringing a taste of Transylvania to the Ozarks.

Dacia LLC is the first restaurant venture for the couple and was inspired by Romulus, who is from Romania.

“We both love cooking and we love to be in the kitchen together,” Hannelore said. “We both felt like we were creating magic together.”

Dacia food truck opened in August at the SGF Mobile Food Park just north of Glenstone Street and Chestnut Expressway, but moved this week to the spot vacated this summer by The Wheelhouse LLC. The former Mexican-Thai fusion food truck relocated into a brick-and-mortar location inside the Vib Springfield hotel.

“Being new, if you see an opportunity like this you have to take it,” Hannelore said.

She said Dacia leases the lot from Brick & Mortar Coffee LLC owner Jonathan Putnam.

“They are a fantastic partner,” Hannelore said. “It’s like we’re the food component for Brick & Mortar.”

One of Dacia’s signature dishes is mici, pronounced “meech,” which is made of pork, beef, mutton and seasonings.

“It looks like a ginormous sausage,” she said. “You can smell it a mile away when we put it on the grill.”

Other food items include traditional chimney cakes, potato salad and meatball soup. In the future, Hannelore said they’ll add kabobs, polenta and stuffed cabbage items to the menu.

The name of the food truck is meaningful, Hannelore said, as it was the name of Romania before it was conquered in 106 AD.
