Retail center planned at former credit union

A retail center is planned at the site of a former credit union near downtown Springfield.

Mark Patrick, senior sales agent for Coldwell Banker Vanguard, Realtors, said he worked with the new property owner, SJK Property LLC, on the purchase that closed May 15 for an undisclosed price.

The seller, TelComm Credit Union, took over the 1029 S. Campbell Ave. property last year when it merged with Springfield Catholic Credit Union. The former Springfield Catholic branch closed as TelComm officials sought a property sale, Springfield Business Journal previously reported.

Patrick said SJK Property intends to raze the building, likely within 30 days, and construct a 4,500-square-foot retail space in its place. Branco Enterprises Inc. was hired as general contractor for the project designed by Hood-Rich Inc.

“It’s a speculative project,” he said. “We’re looking for right now either a build-to-suit on the site or, if that doesn’t surface, … three 1,500-square-foot bays.”

Construction should start soon after the demolition, with the retail center targeted to open in mid-November, Patrick said. The property site on South Campbell Avenue is near the Grand Street intersection, south of Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Declining to disclose the owner of SJK Property, Patrick said it’s operated by an individual investor who’s “always looking for opportunities.” According to Missouri secretary of state corporate filings, attorney Douglas Carter is the registered agent and organizer of SJK Property.
