UBreakiFix
Electronics repair franchise uBreakiFix opened a Springfield store April 30 at 2904 S. Glenstone Ave., in the Brentwood Shopping Center. Franchisees Mike Pierce and Brad Reece signed on to open up to 30 stores in Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas in the next three years, said Saige Sutton, who they hired as regional manager. Reece is a Springfield native who worked in restaurant operations for Pierce, a franchisee of Papa John’s Pizza and Genghis Grill, Sutton said. UBreakiFix started in 2009, claiming to “service anything with a power button.” With specialization in smartphone and computer repairs, the brand now operates 390 stores – 21 of them opening in the first quarter this year. Franchisees on average spend $130,000 to start up, and franchise royalties are 7 percent, Sutton said. The Springfield store, uBreakiFix’s third in Missouri, employs six and occupies 2,000 square feet. “This is not usual. This is a very big one,” Sutton said.

Frisco Bicycle Rental Sales & Service
Grown tired of needing flat tire fixes or cold drinks on their regular bike path, Matt and Cari Harrison opened Frisco Bicycle Rental Sales & Service on April 7 along the Frisco Highline Trail in Willard. The couple signed an annual lease for undisclosed terms with Ozark Greenways Inc. and built their shop from two shipping containers. Cari Harrison said they used a plasma cutter and welder to create doorways and windows and connect the 8-by-25-foot containers. Inside, about 30 bikes are on hand for rent and purchase, along with inner tubes, bottle cages, grips and helmets, she said. Mostly dealing with Diamondback, Raleigh and GT brands, Harrison said new bikes start at $150 for kids and go up to $1,500. Rental rates are $8-$16 per hour, up to $50 daily. She declined to disclose startup costs. The only two employees, the Harrisons do bike repairs and sell drinks and snacks. Open three days a week, she said Matt retained his position as vice president of operations for Federal Protection Inc.

MCB New Image Thrift Store
Missouri Council of the Blind on May 1 opened its second Springfield thrift store. The New Image Thrift Store at 520 E. Battlefield Road previously housed a Goodwill. “This is just a huge opportunity for us,” said Jeff La Montia, general manager. MCB has operated a thrift store at 2713 N. Kansas Expressway since 2011. Thrift store profits fund MCB scholarships, grants, summer camps, guide dogs, health benefits and adaptive technology for people who are blind or have vision loss. Store profits in 2017 were nearly $10,000, La Montia said, and he expects the new store to double that. The local thrift stores help MCB’s statewide efforts and contribute to the nonprofit’s $250,000 annual operating budget. Used items sold include clothing, furniture and appliances. La Montia said donation drop-offs are preferred at the north store for processing. The new Springfield store is 12,000 square feet and employs three. La Montia said MCB signed a three-year lease for $10,000 a month with Finley River Realty Inc.
