Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness franchisee PF Arkansas LLC opened its third Springfield club Dec. 17 at 2633 N. Kansas Expressway in Super Center Plaza. PF Arkansas spokesman Ken Horn said customers had been asking for a north-side location to join the others at 1730 S. Campbell Ave. and 2851 W. Republic Road. “It was logical to fill in that gap,” he said. “It’s an attractive area for us.” The new managers are Jordan Turner and Melissa Pettigrew. PF Arkansas owners Rick and David Kueber also are franchisors for Sun Tan City, Horn said, with additional Planet Fitness clubs in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. Horn said New Hampshire-based Planet Fitness (NYSE: PLNT) has approximately 1,600 locations nationally. According to its website, Planet Fitness had more than 12.2 million members in third-quarter 2018. Horn declined to disclose PF Arkansas’ membership numbers in Springfield. Planet Fitness first opened on Republic Road in 2014, followed by the Campbell store in 2015.

Leggett & Platt Inc.
Carthage-based Leggett & Platt Inc. (NYSE: LEG) completed its $1.3 billion purchase of Newnan, Georgia-based Elite Comfort Solutions Inc. on Jan. 16. The acquisition was announced in November and financed via a five-year, $500 million loan, as well as through a recent expansion of Leggett & Platt’s commercial paper program and related revolving credit agreement. Leggett & Platt, led by CEO Karl Glassman, intends to keep all 16 of ECS’ plants operational. ECS is now a business unit within Leggett & Platt’s residential products segment. The purchase followed the local company laying off an unspecified number of employees in December in its fashion bed and home furniture business. Leggett & Platt, a manufacturer of engineered components and products for homes, offices and vehicles, reported net earnings of $53 million in fourth-quarter 2018, up 46 percent from the same period in 2017. Fourth-quarter sales were $1.05 billion, a 6 percent jump from a year earlier.

New Covenant Academy
The first day of classes wrapped up Jan. 22 at the recently opened Liberty Campus for New Covenant Academy. At 3581 S. Kansas Ave., the second location for the private Christian college preparatory school is about a mile from its main campus at 3304 S. Cox Ave., off Kansas Expressway. Roughly 200 students attend the 22,700-square-foot campus, which is designed for up to 300 fifth- through eighth-graders, said Chief Financial Officer Marlys Schoenwetter. The school invested $2.4 million to renovate and expand Life360 Church’s former Park Crest campus, with Godwin & Associates Architects & Engineers Inc. as general contractor. The Liberty Campus accommodates enrollment growth at New Covenant, which Schoenwetter said has 643 students enrolled this semester. The school purchased the property from Life360 in August 2017 for undisclosed terms. Life360 relocated its Park Crest congregation in September 2018 to the former Palace theater at 2220 W. Chesterfield Blvd. in Chesterfield Village.
