Rick and Jane McElvaine on Jan. 9 relocated Maxon’s Diamond Merchants to 2850 E. Battlefield Road and renamed the store Maxon Fine Jewelry. The husband-and-wife business partners built a stand-alone structure for roughly $1 million, according to city building permits, after operating in the Brentwood Center since 1994. Jane McElvaine said the move was motivated by an interest in owning commercial property and by the addition of a Starbucks in front of their store on South Glenstone Avenue. She said the shop sells new and used jewelry, as well as watches by Rolex, Tudor and Tag Heuer. The McElvaines purchased the land from Larry and Tracy Lipscomb and rezoned it for retail use. Varsity Contractors Inc. constructed the building, with 3,900 square feet for Maxon Fine Jewelry and 1,500 square feet for a tenant yet to be secured. The nine-member staff also offers custom jewelry design, appraisal and repair.

Jeremiah Mee CPA & Advisors
Jeremiah Mee rebranded and relocated his accounting firm Jan. 15 to 1245 E. Montclair St. in the Fremont Square. Moving from Kearney Street on the north side, the practice is now known as Jeremiah Mee CPA & Advisors. It previously operated as Wilson & Mee CPAs LLC following his 2012 acquisition of Leslie J. Wilson CPA PC. Leslie Wilson left the practice later that year. Jeremiah Mee said the 18-year-old firm continues to serve its base clients of clergy and missionaries, but it’s pivoting to more business accounts. Mee employs two other certified public accountants, two administrators and six accountants that focus on tax return filings. He signed a five-year-lease for undisclosed terms with Connie Gourley’s Premier Investments LLC and spent an undisclosed sum remodeling the interior. Harris Construction was the general contractor, he said, Arkifex Studios was project architect, and Ellecor Design and Gifts handled interior designs. Mee hired DL Media Inc. to design the company’s new logo, website and business cards.

Mi Mi’s Place
Nichole Bowen opened Mi Mi’s Place on Feb. 1 at 3512 S. National Ave. to replace Mangia: A Nonna’s Italian Kitchen, which she bought last month from Shawn Kraft. The new menu includes a mix of Italian cuisine and American comfort food, from spaghetti and lasagna to meatloaf sub sandwiches and crab macaroni and cheese, she said. Bowen, who had been head chef of Mangia, partnered with her parents Collin and Suanne Bowen plus a silent partner to form CSNB Enterprises LLC and purchase the restaurant – after receiving a purchase offer from Kraft. Bowen said she also took over the lease in the Bradford Center owned by South National Centers LLC. In recent months, Mangia averaged $60,000 in sales, Bowen said. Nonna’s first location opened in 1995 at 306 South Ave. and was followed in 2011 by the south-side restaurant, which Kraft rebranded in 2016 as Mangia. It closed for remodeling on Jan. 20, Bowen said, but reopened as Mi Mi’s Place with the same 10 staff members. Kraft continues to own and operate the downtown Nonna’s.
