One coffee shop replaced another in the French Quarter shopping center, as Architect Coffee Co. LLC opened March 14 at 1604 E. Republic Road. It fills the spot previously occupied by Hebrews Coffee, which abruptly closed last fall. Two couples – Nick and Megan Bearden, and Ryan and Alycia Horn – co-own Architect Coffee. Nick Bearden, who was formerly a manager at Hebrews, said he and Alycia Horn run the 3,400-square-foot shop, which employs 10. He more recently was employed at Black Dog Coffeehouse in Lenexa, Kansas. Architect Coffee’s menu features classic espresso drinks, priced at $2-$6, Bearden said. Prices for breakfast burritos, sandwiches and pastries are $3.25-$8. Startup costs and lease terms with Center Development LLC were not disclosed. Coffee products are sourced from Santa Cruz, California-based Verve Coffee Roasters, which Bearden noted trades directly with farmers from around the world.

Designing Indie
Andie Bottrell on Oct. 9, 2018, started Designing Indie, a home-based business in visual arts and design. As the lone employee, Bottrell said she hires independent contractors as needed for the company’s work in graphic design, photography and film projects. Since opening, Bottrell said she has signed a contract to photograph all the events and exhibits in 2019 for Springfield Art Museum, along with other client projects designing websites, logos and business cards, as well as portrait photo shoots and training videos. Startup costs, which included a website, licensing and camera equipment, were around $3,600, she said. A self-described multidisciplinary artist, Bottrell formerly studied art in Italy, acting in New York City at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and writing and filmmaking in Los Angeles before she returned to Springfield five years ago.

Orange Leaf
After closing late last year, Orange Leaf frozen yogurt is back in Springfield with the March 14 store opening at 1368 E. Republic Road. Jim Troye and his wife Amber purchased the rights from former franchisee Curt Bartell. Jim Troye said they also plan to reopen the Orange Leaf store at 1011 S. Glenstone Ave. by mid-April. He declined to disclose his investment or lease terms. According to Orange Leaf’s website, the company charges a royalty of 5 percent and a marketing fee of 2 percent for franchises, with an estimated initial investment of $313,200. The Republic Road shop operates in 2,500 square feet in the Fremont Corners shopping center, and the Glenstone Avenue store is in 1,500 square feet at a multitenant building. Joseph Bartell owns the Republic Road property, and Superior Properties Plus, care of Midwest Entertainment, owns the Glenstone Avenue building, according to Greene County assessor records.
