Oovvda Winery finds new owners

Posted online

Oovvda Winery won’t be closing after all.

Owner Brian Overboe had planned to shutter the family business after more than a dozen years in operation, but he recently found a buyer who wants to carry on the winery north of Springfield.

“I am excited,” Overboe said this morning. “We’re going to transition ownership over the next several years. We will be remaining open.”

He declined to disclose the sale price or the name of the buyers, as the sale of nearly 10 acres surrounding 5448 N. Berry Lane has not been finalized.

Last summer, Overboe told Springfield Business Journal he planned to close the winery due to his chronic back pain and inability to wait on customers. To better deal with the pain, he moved to a more accessible, single-level home. Selling the home on the adjacent property on Berry Lane meant selling the winery.

At the time, Overboe said it was unlikely he would find owners interested in carrying on the business he opened on Memorial Day in 2005. But he got lucky.

“It’s about a two-year transition, but even after that, we’re friends and I will continue to be a resource for them as needed,” he said. “We’re going to continue with the same names. I want the wines to continue to be excellent.”

Overboe said a new treatment he’s receiving for his back pain is making it more manageable, so he’s able to help with the transition and will remain general manager.

He added, with a laugh, that he’ll “continue to make my own wine, as well.”

Oovvda Winery has the capacity to make 3,000 gallons of wine annually, Overboe said, though recently he’s been running the winery at half capacity. He said many of his customers are local, though the winery draws in tourists and he sells some wholesale wine out of state.

The winery is starting up its lawn concert series again later this month with a performance from the band Riff Raff on April 27.
