Nixa quickly names interim Police chief

Posted online

The city of Nixa yesterday announced the selection of an interim chief of Police, less than a day after the law enforcement office’s leader was appointed city administrator.

In a temporary capacity, Maj. Joe Campbell succeeds Nixa Police Department Chief Jimmy Liles, according to a news release.

Nixa City Council intends to “revisit the status of the position” after 2019 begins, officials said.

Campbell, according to his LinkedIn profile, has worked at the Nixa Police Department for 16 years. He became a lieutenant in 2002, followed by his promotion to major earlier this year. Prior to that, he spent nearly two years as an officer with the Branson Police Department.

At its meeting Monday night, Nixa’s council voted unanimously to make Liles the municipality’s fourth city administrator since the position was created in 1988.

Nixa’s Police chief since March 2014, Liles succeeded 17-year leader Brian Bingle, who retired last year. Public Works Director Doug Colvin, who has served in the role in the interim, was named assistant city administrator in addition to his current jobs leading Public Works and Nixa Utilities.

The city announced in a news release about Liles’ promotion that the appointment of an interim Police chief would soon follow.
