New Tropical Smoothie franchise on the way

The franchisees behind two Tropical Smoothie Cafe locations in Springfield and one in Ozark are adding another to the market.

Matt Mawdsley, who owns the franchises with his wife Leah, said the duo is targeting an opening by late May at 1975 E. Independence St. in James River Towne Center, near Walmart Supercenter. The Mawdsleys signed a five-year lease for undisclosed terms with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ Blue Star Investments to occupy 1,820 square feet. They’re taking over partial space vacated by Carpet One Floor & Home.

“We try to be strategic,” Matt Mawdsley said. “It’s in between the two other locations we have.”

Mawdsley said the infill investment for the new Tropical Smoothie Cafe is $140,000, as crews “basically created the space” since it previously was held only by Carpet One and now is becoming available for two tenants.

The Mawdsleys also operate a cafe at 3645 E. Sunshine St. in Eastgate Plaza, as well as the 3811 S. Campbell Ave. location in the Parkcrest Center. Their franchise in Ozark opened in October 2018. O’Reilly Hospitality Management LLC also operates a Tropical Smoothie franchise at its Moon Town Crossing development in north Springfield.

Matt Mawdsley said Atlanta-based Tropical Smoothie has a formula for laying out its locations.

“They’ve got analysis software they use to prevent cannibalization in the city,” he said.

Mawdsley said the new location would employ up to 30, adding to his current staff of around 65 people between his three current stores.

The menu at Tropical Smoothie includes a range of smoothies and food options, such as wraps and sandwiches.
