New entrance, gym planned at Greenwood

Missouri State University is lining up funds for the final phases of a multiyear expansion and renovation plan at the Greenwood Laboratory School on campus.

Phases II and III call for a 21,000-square-foot multipurpose addition, including a new south entrance and adjacent lobby, a gymnasium with a performance stage and seating for up to 750 people, said Suzanne Shaw, vice president of marketing and communications for MSU.

Shaw said the university raised $3.2 million in private donations for the final phases and submitted an application for fiscal 2020 matching funds to the Missouri Department of Higher Education for the $6.4 million project.

If funded by the state, the MSU Board of Governors would vote this summer to award a construction contract for the final phases, Shaw said.

Project architect BRP Architects earlier this month published a blog post about its design work for Greenwood. BRP Architects also was on board for the $1.4 million Phase I, when it worked alongside general contractor Bales Construction Co. to add locker rooms in 2018.

“This project is a chance to bring Greenwood a great building that will put their school on the map, both within the MSU campus, as well as within their sports district,” said Laura Daugherty, project architect at BRP, in the blog post. “The MSU campus has a great collection of buildings, and it’s exciting to get to add to that list.”

The post indicated the addition would be “a new front door for Greenwood” situated along MSU’s Bear Village Boulevard. A 130-foot glass wall is planned for the entryway, with patterned metal and LED strip lights on the facade, according to BRP’s post. Greenwood’s main entrance is currently located on Harrison Street.

The roughly 110-year-old K-12 Greenwood Laboratory School has operated at 1024 E. Harrison St. on the MSU campus for over 50 years. The private school has an enrollment of around 370 students, according to its website.
