Neighbor’s Mill Bakery & Cafe opened this morning in a nearly full commercial development in central Springfield.

Its second location in Springfield, the restaurant with Arkansas roots began serving customers at 7 a.m., said Clif Brown, who owns the Queen City shops with his wife Lauren. The opening at 1301 E. Sunshine St., Ste 120 — in Sagamore Hill Development Co. LLC’s center at the intersection with National Avenue — comes more than three years after the launch of Neighbor’s Mill at 1435 E. Independence St. in Paige Reese Plaza. Lauren Brown’s parents opened the flagship bakery and cafe in Harrison, Arkansas, in 2000, and another location in Rogers, Arkansas, is a franchise.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s at least been in the back of our minds for about two years,” Clif Brown said this morning of the second Springfield restaurant. “We’ve had a lot of friends come through and a lot of customers from the Independence location come up to check it out.”

At the 35-employee restaurant, Brown said a focus has been placed on grab-and-go items, such as sandwiches and salads, and croissant production was moved to Sunshine from Independence. Custom salads, sandwiches, soups, pastries and bread also are available.

Brown said the restaurant is around 3,000 square feet. Springfield Business Journal previously reported the couple signed a 10-year lease for undisclosed terms.

Branco Enterprises Inc., the general contractor for the project designed by Dake Wells Architecture Inc., last month submitted information to SBJ indicating the construction cost was $533,500.

The Sagamore Hill center, across from Mercy Hospital Springfield, is now 90% leased, said Ross Murray, vice president of R.B. Murray Co., which serves as the listing agent for the development. Craft Sushi and Duff Family Dental are among the tenants; Murray declined to release the names of new businesses that have signed a lease.

Neighbor’s Mill occupies the easternmost portion of the development.
