NBA coach and player Byron Scott and pet food executive Charlie Norris are the first speakers for Drury University’s new Joseph H. George Distinguished Lecture Series.

Scott, a three-time NBA champion who has played for and coached the Los Angeles Lakers, and Norris, chairman of Freshpet Inc. (Nasdaq: FRPT), are scheduled to speak at Drury on Oct. 15 at the school’s Clara Thompson Hall, according to a news release.

Scott and Norris have worked together before, co-authoring the book, “Slam Dunk Success: Leading From Every Position on Life’s Court.” The book focuses on their shared view that leadership is built on understanding and making others around them better.

The planned annual series is named after Drury’s fifth president. George was president at Drury 1907-13, when the school reversed a financial deficit and oversaw construction of new buildings that still exist, including Burnham Hall and the gymnasium that later became Springfield Hall.

George’s grandson, Walt George, a member of the Drury Board of Trustees, contributed an undisclosed sum to start the lecture series, according to the release.
