Missouri State University penned a rental agreement with KY3 Inc. to broadcast Ozarks Public Television.
MSU on July 23 began medium-power operation from a Fordland television tower owned by KY3. The MSU-affiliated TV station is renting space on the tower, according to a news release. Documentation provided by MSU Marketing and Communications Vice President Suzanne Shaw indicates the university agreed to pay a one-time fee of $15,000, plus a $10,000 per month license fee during the course of the 12-month contract.
“KY3 has been an incredibly supportive partner since day one, adjusting their own busy schedules to assist OPT in returning to service as quickly as possible,” said Tammy Wiley, general manager of broadcast services for the station, in the release.
The agreement follows the collapse of a separate tower in Fordland in April. The KOZK tower owned by MSU fell over during maintenance, killing one worker and hospitalizing three others. OPT is the MSU licensee for KOZK, according to its website.
Shortly after the accident, OPT installed a low-power interim broadcast system on an MSU rooftop. With placement on the KY3 tower, OPT expects to boost its service to up to 85 percent for over-the-air, cable and satellite viewers. Most Springfield-area viewers initially lost service after the tower collapse, according to the release.
As OPT rents space from KY3, officials with the public TV station and MSU are exploring next steps. Officials are considering whether to build a new tower or enter into a long-term lease arrangement for permanent operations.
Officials say the full restoration of over-the-air service likely will take several months, according to the release.
