More than 30 companies seek veteran employees

Posted online

Fresh off the Independence Day holiday, a hiring and resource fair this week seeks to reach military veterans and their families.

More than two dozen companies are expected to attend the July 11 veteran-focused event at American Legion Post 639, 2660 S. Scenic Ave., according to a news release. The free event, slated to start at 2 p.m., is open to all veterans, transitioning service members, reserves, National Guard, military spouses and the general public.

Sabrina Bonnette, the local veterans employment representative for the Missouri Department of Economic Development, said Bass Pro Shops, CoxHealth and Mercy, and Buckhorn Inc. are among the 31 organizations currently on tap for the annual event. The employers have a combined 300-400 job openings, said Katherine Trombetta, a city of Springfield workforce development spokeswoman.

“There will be several service providers on hand to help veterans, retirees and veteran spouses with housing, education, career planning and supplemental assistance for the elderly,” said Bonnette, a retired U.S, Navy chief petty officer, in the release. “It is an avenue to learn how to access earned benefits, gain helpful insights on navigating the civilian employment world and find an outlet of support from other military members.”
