The Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday struck a blow to debtors' prisons.
With the decision, state courts can no longer threaten further jail time for unpaid prison debts, according to the Houston Herald.
The ruling came when the court overturned a circuit court decision over Appleton City resident George Richey's inability to pay more than $5,000 worth of debt incurred in prison. The lower court said he could be sent back to jail for not paying the so-called board bills.
