Meek’s Lumber Co., under the fresh ownership of two private investment firms in California, consolidated six of its Missouri stores.
In its hometown of Springfield, Meek’s closed its 3250 E. Sunshine St. store and consolidated its operations into the 1551 W. Mount Vernon St. location off Kansas Expressway, said Trent Waterhouse, an independent marketing and advertising adviser for Angeles Equity Partners, one of the new owners.
Last month, Angeles partnered with Clearlake Capital Group LP to buy Meek’s for undisclosed terms. The companies formed American Construction Source to acquire Meek’s and other building materials companies, placing the new company’s headquarters in the Queen City, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
“This was a data-driven business decision after careful analysis and consultation with the Meek family,” Waterhouse said in an emailed statement about the Sunshine Street store. “All but two of the Sunshine location employees are being offered the opportunity to transfer to one of Meek's other Springfield metro locations.
“Meek's will continue to grow the company from local strength into a leading national building products platform.”
The other store changes are:
• the consolidation of Meek’s Greenfield store into its Mount Vernon location;
• the consolidation of its Saint Robert location into Rolla; and
• the consolidation of its Poplar Bluff, Doniphan and Mountain Grove stores into a West Plains location.
“A total of 20 employees across the six locations have been affected by the consolidations,” Waterhouse said in the statement.
He could not be reached for further comment by deadline.
Meek’s website now lists 44 stores in four states. The company most recently reported annual revenue of $325 million in an October 2017 Springfield Business Journal article.
The sale to Angeles and Clearlake came just before the company’s 100th anniversary in the Meek family.
The store consolidations were first reported by the Springfield News-Leader.
Utah-based gourmet cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opened its first Springfield shop; interior design business Branson Upstaging LLC relocated; and Lauren Ashley Dance Center LLC added a second location.
