Layer 3 Technology purchased by Colorado firm

Aurora, Colorado-based business services provider Avitus Group purchased Springfield information technology firm Layer 3 Technology.

The 23-employee Springfield company joins a business that provides a variety of back-office support services, including payroll, accounting, human resources and IT. Layer 3 is now part of the Avitus Technology Services unit, according to a news release issued yesterday. Layer 3 CEO John Horton said the company would change to the Avitus Technology Services name in around six months. He noted the purchase closed Sept. 29 for undisclosed terms.

“This merger will be great for all of our existing clients as well as the business community in general,” Horton said this morning via email. “Avitus Group will open up many more opportunities for businesses to simplify, strengthen and grow, allowing them to focus on business, not the back-office hassles that are required but burdensome.”

Layer 3 Technology was created in 2004 when Horton’s Technology Innovations Inc. and Ryan McCoy’s Layer 3 Inc. merged. McCoy served as vice president, according to Springfield Business Journal archives. Horton said he now works as director of technology sales with McCoy as director of technology services for Avitus Technology Services in Springfield.

Through Avitus Group’s purchase of Layer 3 — which offers managed services such as desktop and server support, network security and IT infrastructure — the Colorado firm gains a foothold in southwest Missouri. Its closest office — and only other in Missouri — is located in Independence, according to its website.

“Layer 3 Technology brings a strong team full of talent and expertise, as well as strong company financials under the Avitus Group umbrella,” Avitus Chairman Willis Chrans said in the release. “The acquisition also enables us to offer our full suite of professional business services to new markets.”
