The Missouri Association of School Administrators honored Springfield Public Schools Superintendent John Jungmann with one of its top awards.
Jungmann was selected by a committee of his peers to receive MASA’s 2019 Robert L. Pearce Award, according to a news release. MASA spokesman David Luther said the organization’s other top award is Superintendent of the Year, an honor Jungmann took home in 2016.
The winner of the Pearce Award — which recognizes outstanding superintendents and is named after longtime MASA supporters — is chosen by industry peers, while Superintendent of the Year is selected by MASA, according to the organization’s website.
The eight MASA districts in the state chose a superintendent nominee for the award. Jungmann was chosen over:
• Roger Barnes, Chillicothe R-2 School District;
• Robert Brinkley, Odessa R-7 School District;
• Kenneth Cook, Malden R-1 School District;
• Jacque Cowherd, Fulton 58 School District;
• Eric Knost, Rockwood School District;
• Kari Monsees, Raymore-Peculiar School District; and
• Patricia Thompson, Crawford County R-1 School District.
The MASA release pointed to Jungmann’s work implementing SPS programs such as IGNiTE, a personalized learning method that stands for inspire, grow, network, integrate, transform and engage. He’s also led improvements in all grades in the Missouri Assessment Program in the area of English language arts, according to the release.
“Missouri districts must show they are ready and willing to innovate and successfully compete with those who would like to see public education tax funds flow to charter, private or for-profit virtual schools,” Jungmann said in the release.
Jungmann in January was granted his fifth contract extension as SPS superintendent. His base salary for the 2018-19 academic year is $265,110, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
Previous winners of the Robert L. Pearce Award include Stephen Kleinsmith from Nixa in 2009 and C.J. Huff from Joplin in 2010, Luther said.
MASA is a statewide professional association with a membership of more than 600 superintendents and administrators, according to its website.
