JCPenney to shutter Springfield Home Store

Plano, Texas-based J. C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) is slated to shut down its Springfield Home Store as part of a larger closure announcement.

The company, dba JCPenney, is planning a fall closure for the store at 3402 S. Glenstone Ave. in Primrose Marketplace, said spokeswoman Sarah Holland. The Battlefield Mall store, 2825 S. Glenstone Ave., will remain open, she said.

“These decisions are the result of an ongoing review of our store portfolio, which includes assessing locations that may not meet our required financial targets or represent an opportunity to capitalize on a beneficial real estate asset,” Holland said via email. “It’s never easy taking actions that directly impact our valued associates and customers; however we feel this is a necessary business decision.

“Eligible associates who do not transfer to another JCPenney location will receive separation benefits and all impacted associates may participate in a three-hour on-site career training class, at no cost to the associate, which offers tips on resume writing, answering interview questions and more.”

JCPenney’s Home Store locations sell furniture, decor and other homes supplies. Holland did not say how many employees would be affected at the Springfield store, and she could not be reached this morning by deadline for additional comment.

Also in Missouri, Holland said a JCPenney store in Sikeston and a Home Store in St. Louis are among locations scheduled to close this year. The company recently announced the closure of 27 stores this year.

JCPenney, which operates more than 860 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, posted a 9.5 percent drop in sales to $3.7 billion in the fourth quarter and 69 percent decrease in quarterly profits to $75 million, according to its Feb. 28 earnings news release. The release included the store closure plans.

JCP shares were trading at $1.56 as of 9:01 a.m., compared with a 52-week range of 92 cents to $3.89.
