Southwest Center for Independent Living’s six-month interim CEO got the nod from the nonprofit’s board of directors to take on the role in a permanent capacity.
Shannon Porter, who formerly served as deputy director, officially succeeded Emilio Vela, who exited the nonprofit after two years to move back to Washington, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
Porter was selected by SCIL’s board on Aug. 13, according to a news release issued this week to Springfield Business Journal.
“SCIL’s mission is my passion, and I see great things in our future. I’m proud to work for such a fantastic organization,” Porter said in the release.
Porter, according to her LinkedIn profile, has worked with SCIL since 2010, first as assistive technology specialist. Prior to that, she was a disability counselor for the state of Missouri. The release cited Porter’s work at SCIL on its access and technology program for people with disabilities.
SCIL, which offers disability advocacy services, ranked 13th on SBJ’s list this year of the area’s largest nonprofits. On the list published Jan. 29, SCIL reported 45 employees and an operating budget of $7.8 million.
