Hinode owners plan July opening for Korean BBQ restaurant

Posted online

Father and son David and Cosmo Kwon are partnering on a new Korean barbecue venture in Springfield.

The Kwons, who also own Hinode Japanese Steakhouse, are planning an early July opening for their new restaurant dubbed Bawi Korean BBQ, according to a Facebook post.

The 4121 S. National Ave. restaurant — less than a mile from Hinode at 4301 S. National Ave. — is a vacant Ruby Tuesday the Kwons purchased, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

“Korean barbecue is a very communal type of dining,” Cosmo Kwon told SBJ in November for a business spotlight article. “It is a fun experience, because four, five, six people together, and instead of just sitting there and waiting for your food to come out, you’re actually partaking in that experience with each other.”

Kwon could not be reached this morning for comment by deadline.

He and his father originally planned to call the restaurant The Grilling Dokebi, according to past SBJ reporting. It’s unclear why the name changed to Bawi, which according to online translations, means rock in Korean.

The Kwons previously operated a Korean barbecue in Orange County, California, for two years before moving to Springfield to purchase and operate Hinode.

Bawi, which bills itself as Springfield’s first Korean barbecue grillhouse, recently won best booth during Taste of SoMo, according to its Facebook page.
