Habitat for Humanity dedicates $200K for home projects

Posted online

Habitat for Humanity of Springfield announced this week it’s dedicating $200,000 to complete major home repair projects in Woodland Heights.

The north Springfield neighborhood bordered by Kansas Expressway and Kearney Street is the nonprofit’s partner in its newest program, called Neighborhood Revitalization.

High-priority repair projects include roof replacement, HVAC replacement, electrical or plumbing upgrades, sewer line replacement and foundation stabilization, according to a news release. Woodland Heights residents selected for the repair projects will repay a portion of the expenses.

Since 2011, the Habitat for Humanity affiliate has completed 56 major repair projects and more than 80 minor repairs, such as brush cleanups, mowing and trimmings, said Abby Glenn, development associate for the nonprofit.

“There is no timeline for Neighborhood Revitalization to be complete,” Glenn said. “We hope that this financial commitment by Habitat will encourage other community partners to join our efforts and make a pledge to revitalize Woodland Heights.”

The Neighborhood Revitalization program goal is to improve quality of life of a neighborhood by working with area businesses, government, residents and nonprofits that share a vision of revitalization, according to the release. Woodland Heights’ focus areas of revitalization include beautification, community, housing, health and safety.

The financial commitment is from Habitat for Humanity’s reserve funds, said board President Glenn Green, in the release.

Woodland Heights’ homeowners interested in applying for assistance can request a home repair application through Habitat for Humanity. Qualified applicants should have a household gross income at or below 60 percent of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development area median income, hold title to the home and live in the home. For a family of two, annual household income should be at or below $28,000, or $36,000 for a family of four.
