Drury appoints leader of new advising center

Posted online

Drury University hired Jennifer Joslin as the first director of the Robert and Mary Cox Compass Center. Joslin’s first day on the job is July 1.

The Compass Center is part of the university’s overall curriculum model for day students, which launches this fall. It will serve as a hub for student advising, according to a news release.

“I am excited to lead a dynamic team at a student-focused institution,” Joslin said in the release. “The Robert and Mary Cox Compass Center will empower students to reach academic, career and life goals.”

The center will be located in the planned Design Enterprise Solution Center, which will also be the new home of the Breech School of Business Administration, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. Drury officials have said they expect to break ground on the 53,000-square-foot building later this year.

“We are thrilled Jennifer brings her extensive experience and knowledge to this important new pillar of the Drury academic experience,” said Drury President Tim Cloyd, in the release. “She has been at the forefront of improving college advising for students nationally and around the world for many years.”

Since 2013, Joslin served as associate director of Nacada: The Global Community for Academic Advising, an organization that promotes advising in higher education and boasts more than 14,000 members worldwide, according to the release. Joslin was responsible for training and developing curricula for advisers and administrators.

Before joining Nacada, she spent five years as director of the Office of Academic Advising at the University of Oregon and 13 years as associate director for training and development at the University of Iowa. She earned doctorate and master’s degrees in health and sports studies from the University of Iowa.

As part of the new Drury curriculum, called Your Drury Fusion, each student will have a faculty adviser, staff adviser, career planning and development mentor, and a success coach. And incoming freshmen now will graduate with three credentials, which is a combination of a major, certificate and one additional major, minor or certificate of the students’ choosing, according to past SBJ reporting. Your Drury Fusion bucks traditional single majors in favor of mixing in 12-credit-hour certificates consisting of three multidisciplinary courses followed by a hands-on capstone project.
