Officials with the city of Springfield’s Public Works Department are hosting a public meeting this month to present the initial designs for $5 million in resident-approved improvements to Galloway Street.
The widening of Galloway Street between Luster and Lone Pine avenues was marked as the No. 2 priority in a survey conducted by the city last year. Residents in April renewed the city’s quarter-cent capital improvement sales tax at the ballot box, setting up an estimated $11 million in funds annually for Galloway upgrades and other road, bridge, stormwater and sidewalk projects.
Public Works is scheduled to show off the initial designs of the Galloway improvements during a 5:30 p.m. meeting on May 21 at All Saints Anglican Church, 2751 E. Galloway St., according to a news release.
Beyond the widening of Galloway Street to three lanes, plans call for two roundabouts at the intersections with Luster and Lone Pine avenues; a new center turn lane; a new path on the north side of the street to better connect Sequiota Park and the Ozarks Greenways trail; upgraded stormwater infrastructure; and improved railroad crossing.
Construction is expected to start in fall 2020 and wrap up in fall 2021, according to the release.
The improvement area serves as one of the main entryways into Galloway Village, where at least $21 million in projects were completed or started during 2018, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
Separately, the city is hosting public meetings with Galloway Village stakeholders on the future of the quaint southeast Springfield neighborhood. The first meeting was held in February, and the most recent was last night.
