Carson-Mitchell transitions to next-gen leadership

Posted online

Springfield general contractor Carson-Mitchell Inc. put in place its third generation of family leaders.

Jason Carson became CEO and his cousin Chris Carson was named president of the firm last month, Chris Carson said. The cousins also became co-owners through the transition.

“Essentially, our president and vice president, who are my dad and my uncle, are both retiring,” Carson said, referring to his father, former company President Kit Carson, and Jason’s father Jim Carson, who worked as vice president. “We just finally made it official.”

Chris Carson said the elder Carsons have been working toward retirement since Chris and Jason returned to Springfield around 2003, and the transition began in earnest over the past five years.

Kit and Jim Carson, as well as a third family member, company secretary Doug Carson, became board members through the leadership change.

“They’re still available for consultation, but not involved in the day-to-day business,” Chris Carson said.

In 2017, Carson-Mitchell had record contracts awarded, at $28 million, via 10 major projects and 20 minor projects, Carson said, declining to disclose revenue. The company, which also operates a crane rental fleet, has conducted recent academic building renovations for Missouri State University, and Carson said work in the industrial sector and the Branson market also are driving growth.

Carson-Mitchell, which Carson said is in its 73rd year, currently employs around 10 at its 2119 E. Division St. office, as well as 30 in the field. Chester Carson Sr. started the company in 1946 with business partner Larry Mitchell. He kept the combined name even after Mitchell left a few years later, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
