Businesses sign on for downtown mini-golf event

More than 30 businesses are on board for a downtown pop-up mini-golf event tomorrow.

Downtown Springfield Association is running the family-friendly front nine, with The Flea, Skinny Slim's Public House and Wil Fischer Distributing Co. leading the adult-centered back nine. Wil Fisher is among 16 sponsors of the event.

Bethany Bell, DSA events manager, said the organization partnered with The Flea, Skinny Slim's and Wil Fischer after learning they were planning a similar event.

“Those have been the three forces behind the back nine,” she said.

For the event, attendees pay a sign-up fee to putt at holes placed inside and outside venues throughout downtown. Park Central Square is serving as home base, where live music will be playing and a specialty hole built by Dake Wells Architecture Inc. will be set up for the potential to win dinner at Hotel Vandivort. There also will be disc golf and warm-up holes on the square, Bell said.

“The majority are pretty straightforward. Some people are getting really creative,” she said of the holes, noting Dake Wells’ putting course has multiple ramps to increase the challenge.

Grady Wisdom, owner of The Flea, said he and Skinny Slim's owner Rob Hoerr had been tossing the idea around for years and deciding to pull the trigger this year. They then heard of the DSA researching a similar event and sat down to talk.

“We thought it was a fun way to unify the downtown bar scene,” Wisdom said.

Wisdom said Skinny Slim’s No. 18 hole will have a water hazard, and The Flea’s course will be complete with a windmill and a clown.

“The Flea is supposed to be about flea market finds and kind of trash to treasure,” he said. “You’re not going to pass up on a metal windmill that’s very reasonably priced.”

Bell said some of the businesses involved borrowed putt-putt holes from Community Partnership of the Ozarks, which hosts a mini-golf fundraiser in February. The businesses that borrowed course equipment agreed to donate an item to CPO for the auction that accompanies the February event.

Event pricing is $20 for two people and $30 for four. She said proceeds from the back nine would help fund Alzheimer's disease research.
