Burrell, Fordland Clinic form alliance

Burrell Behavioral Health upped the ante in its community partnership game.

On the heels of three recent partnership announcements, Burrell penned a letter of intent to form a strategic affiliation with the Fordland Clinic, according to a news release.

Through the agreement, the nonprofit organizations would provide services to each other’s patients. Burrell’s patients would receive primary care at the organization’s 1300 E. Bradford Parkway campus by way of the Fordland Clinic, and the latter organization would expand its behavioral health services in Fordland and Kimberling City. The organizations will remain autonomous with their own boards of directors through the deal expected to be finalized in early summer after a due diligence period, officials said.

“Our clients shouldn’t have to think of mental health and physical health as different things,” Burrell President and CEO C.J. Davis said in the release. “We know that more than half of those seeking behavioral services don’t have a primary care physician, while more than half of all primary care treatments would benefit from behavioral health consultation. So integrating these services under the same roof just makes sense.

“In Fordland Clinic we have found a partner equally committed to ensuring our shared clients experience care as a fully integrated primary care-behavioral health system.”

The partnership takes advantage of Burrell’s participation in the three-year exploratory phase of the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic program established through the 2016 Excellence in Mental Health Act, sponsored by Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Missouri. Burrell is reimbursed in a cost-based system through the program, similar to federally qualified health clinics such as Fordland. The Fordland Clinic provides a partner for Burrell to utilize the federal resources, according to the release.

The Fordland Clinic offers family practice, dental and mental health care services. Burrell — with a projected $125 million budget at the end of the current fiscal year — has some 40,000 clients in Missouri, with another 5,000 to be added through a previously announced merger with Fayetteville, Arkansas-based Youth Bridge Inc., according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

Burrell recently announced partnerships with the Greene County Family Justice Center, Springfield Public Schools and Mercy Springfield Communities.
