Blog: Missouri State’s mysterious messaging

Posted online

Missouri State University is teasing something tantalizing.

The university on Wednesday launched a Facebook event, and on Thursday, a banner was spotted on a downtown building.

“It’s on!” reads the banner hanging from MSU’s Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center, further pointing to an event at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 26.

I asked an MSU spokesperson about the teaser campaign. Not much more is being released — for now.

“We can say that it’s an event not to be missed and will be transformational for Missouri State. More information will be released as the date nears,” spokeswoman Emily Yeap said via email.

Similarly, the Facebook event uses the word “transformational” and indicates the fall event will last three hours.

A couple clues: Oct. 25-26 is marked for MSU’s homecoming, and the 5:30 event time comes 30 minutes after the Bears football game against Northern Iowa is expected to finish.

So, will it be a sports-related announcement, or is MSU using already captive eyes at homecoming to unveil something else entirely?

Your guess is as good as mine, and as difficult as it may be to accept, it looks like MSU isn’t spilling the beans for the time being.

Flying away
Speaking of surprises, a downtown mural that’s popular among Instagrammers left the cocoon — but it didn’t go far.

Springfield artist Andrea Ehrhardt’s mural of butterfly wings at the intersection of Walnut Street and South Avenue flew across the street. If you’re not familiar with the butterfly wings, you might know Ehrhardt for her “Greetings from Springfield” mural on the Discovery Center building, 438 St. Louis St., or for her Bass Pro Shops project art.

The street art formerly at 328 South Ave. was removed Thursday, Ehrhardt told me yesterday afternoon as she worked to finish the replacement mural on the side of Mediterranean restaurant Riad, 400 South Ave. Restaurant owner Riad Matar was on-site snapping pictures, as well.

Renovation work is underway at 328 South, where a Springfield building permit points to plans to add two loft apartments on the second floor. The March 13 building permit lists a declared valuation of $100,000.

As I walked by, I briefly spoke with a worker, who told me the building owner — Wolf Residential LLC, according to Greene County assessor records — is preparing the building to secure a tenant. An attempt to reach Wolf Residential’s operators was unsuccessful by deadline.
