Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is running a promotion for federal government employees affected by the continued shutdown.
Starting today and continuing Monday though Thursdays during the rest of the month, furloughed federal workers are eligible for a free ticket per day to see a film at the Springfield theater, 4005 South Ave., said Jennifer Johnmeyer, creative manager for the venue. General admission is $10.25 for 2D films, according to Alamo’s website.
“Movies are such a great escape,” she said. “We thought this would be a natural fit.”
Johnmeyer said the Springfield theater was the first to launch the promotion, but other Alamo venues have since picked it up, as well.
Alamo Drafthouse Springfield decided to make the move when officials at the theater learned that Jan. 11 was the first day furloughed employees would not receive their paychecks, she said.
Since posting about the promotion on Jan. 10 through Facebook, the post has received 824 shares, 178 comments and some 1,200 reactions. Johnmeyer said she was unsure how many people the promotion would draw.
“What we learned when we posted on Facebook is it seems to be quite a few,” she said. “We’re going to look at it again if we’re still going in February — we don’t have a specific cap in mind.”
Among others lending support to furloughed workers is Ozarks Food Harvest, which announced on Facebook it’s working to distribute food to locals impacted by the federal situation.
Today is the 24th day for the longest federal government shutdown in history, which is largely due to arguments for and against a Mexican border wall, according to CNN.
Utah-based gourmet cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opened its first Springfield shop; interior design business Branson Upstaging LLC relocated; and Lauren Ashley Dance Center LLC added a second location.
